The Nunavut Development Corporation is a Crown corporation of the Government
of Nunavut. Established with the creation of Nunavut on April 1st, 1999, the Nunavut Development
Corporation is mandated to:
- Create employment and income opportunities for residents of Nunavut, especially
those in smaller communities
- Stimulate the growth and development of local businesses
- Promote economic diversity and long-term stability
To achieve these goals, the Nunavut Development Corporation has focused on
value added exportable products from the wealth of talented artisans and
unique natural resources in Nunavut. With nine subsidiaries in seven communities,
the Nunavut Development Corporation has businesses in the arts and crafts,
clothing and meat and fish industries. More than 525 Nunavut residents
work directly for or are indirectly employed through Nunavut Development companies.
The Nunavut Development Corporation maintains a retail sales division in
Toronto with a retail location in Terminal 3 of the Lester B. Pearson
International Airport. In addition, there is a wholesale showroom in
Mississauga. This division is the main outlet for the marketing and sale of
the arts and crafts produced by Nunavut Development Corporation companies. It
also supports the retail location.
